Congratulations to Marsel van Oosten for capturing the below image and becoming Wildlife Photographer of the year 2018. The Golden snub-nosed monkeys featured in the award winning image are an endangered species living in the Qinling mountains in China. They are constantly on the move so Marsel had his work cut out just to catch up with them trekking through the steep slopes and mountain gorges.
But thanks for persisting Marsel, the image you captured was amazing and thoroughly deserving of such a prestigious award.
In comparison my task was less arduous, and I managed to complete it without leaving the comforts of my own studio. I wanted to paint a giant painting from Marsel’s image of two leopards. My aim was that the leopards should be big enough to give the impression to the viewer that they were life size. This meant painting on a canvass bigger than I’d ever used before. But there is always opportunity in difficulties and it meant that I could add incredible detail to the leopards. I hope I have managed to convey the emotions of the two animals. I will be exhibiting the paintin for the first time at Konst Helg, Lund Scandic Hotel from 1st November, come along and see the work in its full glory.
